Johann Ulrich¹ Arner (son of Johann Heinrich Anner), born at Windlach, Zurich, Switzerland and christened 05 December 1699 at Stadel, Zurich, Switzerland (Sponsors: Johann Ulrich Vogel and _______?)(Baptismal Record₍₁₎);  died by 1777 probably in North Whitehall, Northampton (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania, USA;  married 03 January 1722/3 at Stadel to Verena Eberhardt (daughter of Heinrich Eberhardt and Anna Gassman) who was christened 25 September 1701 at Kloten, Zurich, Switzerland and died after 1777 probably in North Whitehall.

They left Windlach for America in 1734₍₁₎[also page 81 (surname mis-transcribed as “Auer”), Lists of Swiss Emigrants in the Eighteenth Century to the American Colonies, Albert Bernhardt Faust, published by National Genealogical Society, Washington, DC, 1920]. They came to America with a colony of Swiss immigrants led by the Reverend Maurice Goetschy on the ship Mercury, which sailed from Rotterdam via Cowes, Isle of Wight, England and arrived at Philadelphia on 29 May 1735. Part of the story of this group’s trip was published in “History of the Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge”, Pennsylvania German Society Proceedings, Volume 27, published in 1916 (this article is also transcribed on Reed Wurts’ website).

They settled in the New Goschenhoppen area, in Upper Hanover, Philadelphia (now Montgomery), Pennsylvania. He was a contributor to the first New Goschenhoppen Church building (which was built during or before 1739).

On 27 February 1744, he received a warrant to buy 105 acres of land along the Jordan Creek in what is now North Whitehall Township, Lehigh, Pennsylvania_(E). At that time, Whitehall Township (including now North Whitehall) was in Bucks County, in the part that was set off as Northampton County in 1752, then set off as Lehigh County in 1812. He sold a tract of nearly 400 acres to Michael Deibert in 1750 and on 26 May 1751 he received a warrant to buy different land in the same area_(E).

On 28 March 1745, Hans Ulrich “Arnd” was on the first list of members of the Heidelberg Union Church_(F). Biography in Lehigh County History_(E). There are no Arner’s on the list of members who built the second Heidelberg Church in 1756.

[Verena is mentioned as still living and still having a dower right in her husband’s estate, in the final settlement of their son Felix’s estate, filed 06 January 1778 (Northampton Will File #0741). She is probably the “Widow Arner” on the Whitehall Tax List in 1781.]

Their exact burial place is not known. Their memorial stone is at Heidelberg Church, and was dedicated on 25 August 2002. [For other photos, see here.]

Margaretha² Arner, christened 21 December 1723₍₁₎;  died 12 February 1729 at Windlach₍₁₎.

+    VERENA² ARNER, christened 24 June 1725₍₁₎;  married Heinrich Schleiffer;  moved to Upper Milford, Bucks (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania; then back to Upper Hanover.

+    Felix² Arner, born 02-03 January 1726/7₍₁₄₎ and christened 05 January 1726/7 (Sponsors: Felix Vogel and Anna ______?)(Baptismal Record₍₁₎);  married Maria Elizabetha _______.

+    Johann Ulrich² Arner, christened 10 January 1728/9 (Sponsors: Johann Ulrich Vogel and Verena ______?)(Baptismal Record₍₁₎);  married Margaretha ______;  moved to Towamensing, Northampton (now Franklin, Carbon), Pennsylvania.

Margaretha² Arner, christened 05 March 1729/30₍₁₎. She came to America with her parents. No further info about her has been found yet.

Anna Barbara² Arner, christened 1732₍₁₎;  died 19 March 1734 at Windlach₍₁₎.

Anna Catharina² Arner, christened 24 July 1737 (Sponsor: Anna Catrina Strom, wife of Benedict Strom)(recorded at New Goshenhoppen Reformed Congregation, above).

+    Heinrich² Arner, born 20 August 1742₍₂₎ probably in North Whitehall and christened 19 September 1742 (Sponsors: Heinrich Hauser and wife)₍₂₎;  married CATHERINE DAUBENSPECK;  moved to Hempfield, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.
