In 1928, Ray Donovan enlisted in the New York National Guard and was assigned to Company L of the 107th Infantry Regiment (previously the 7th Regiment New York State Militia, or 7th infantry). It was known as the "Silk Stocking Regiment" for the many members of New York City's social elite among its ranks, and the armory's location on Park Avenue in the Silk Stocking District of the Upper East Side. Members had to be nominated by another member, much like joining a fraternity. Ray re-enlisted in 1931.
