"Les grandes eaux musicales," Versailles. Once or twice a week in summer, the fountains of Versailles are turned on, to the accompaniment of classical music. The effect is spectacular, even to us jaded by the special effects of our modern age. The engineering work it took to accomplish this 300 years ago is amazing. Even today it takes an army of specially trained "fountaineers" to keep things working. The spectacle brings the gardens to life, and makes it easier to imagine what is must have been like to live here. The palace itself is in the distance.
