An Anhinga spreads its wings to "thermoregulate," or warm up. These birds, common in fresh water along the Gulf Coast, swim under water looking for fish to spear. We watched one eat an enormous catfish. It took several minutes to loosen the fish from its bill and gulp it down (the fish fell out once, and had to be retrieved).
