A "hardwood hammock" in Everglades National Park. These islands of mahogany, Gumbo Limbo, and palm trees rise just a few feet above the surrounding sea of grass that makes up much of the Everglades. Here is where many of the land mammals live, including the endangered panther (no, we didn't see one). We were the only people on this trail, and all we could hear were the calls and skitterings of critters hidden in the thick growth.
